| What Our Participants Say: "Mediators were very congenial, straightforward and very fair." "Your people couldn't have been more fair, more intelligent or more positive. Your service is really excellent. They really listened." "This should always be the first step in resolving differences." "I see a process that works ... I would always recommend mediation rather than litigation." "We each understand each other's view better." |

Mediators are members of the community who have received at least 24 hours of specialized training in conflict resolution techniques and communication skills, and are required to attend ongoing refresher trainings each year. They guide the parties through the mediation process, and they assist the parties with communication and negotiation. Mediators do not give advice, counsel or decide who is right or wrong. BECOMING A VOLUNTEER MEDIATOR: To become a mediator, you must attend MSM’s basic mediation training course (about 32 hours) and pass an interview with our Executive Director. If you are already a trained mediator, the requirement is the same. Because there are different models of mediation, we need to be assured that the volunteer mediator uses the Facilitative Model. In this model mediators are neutral, third parties who do not give advice evaluate the case or make decisions for the parties. MSM mediators are required to read and abide by the MCH Ethics and Standards Handbook. Mediation Centers of Hawaii (MCH) is a six center coalition, and MSM is a member. MSM needs more volunteers at all levels of the agency. Please contact us for more information: 244-5744.
